FORESHADOWED

CeeCee's eyes widened. “It wasn’t me.”

“Me either.” Bernard lifted his hands in surrender.

It took me a second to scan the room for any signs of magic, but again I came up empty. “I know. It’s the flipping ghost. He won’t stop hassling me.”

“Humph. No way,” Annalise said. “Margery would have chased the pest away with a cleansing if there were one. And what ghost moves in with a witch? They’d be asking to get bounced out.”

“And yet…” I gestured to the sangria that Bernard was now mopping up with a tea towel.

“Telekinesis.” Annalise eyed Bernard suspiciously. “It was you, wasn’t it?”

Bernard shot her an incredulous look. “Please. I’m a spell guy.

Did you hear me muttering any incantations?” He didn’t wait for a response, just continued to sop up the mess.

Because he was right: we’d have heard him. That was one of the rules of witch magic. To use a spell, you have to speak it aloud.

Potions had to come in contact with their target—touch, ingestion, inhalation—and spells had to be spoken. There wasn’t any getting around that.

Annalise turned to CeeCee, who pointed to her potion. “I’m all about brewing. No telekinesis here.” CeeCee turned her attention to me. “Why in the world would Margery not get rid of it? Even if it likes

the house enough to return and get bounced out again, she could have done a cleansing right before the party.”

Bernard shook out the tea towel in the trash can, the shards of glass tinkling as they fell. He gave the sangria-soaked towel a disgusted look and then chucked it in as well. “Anyone consider that Margery’s house is an especially odd choice?” He looked at me expectantly—but I didn’t know and shook my head. He said, “All Hallows’ Eve, the one night of the year that a ghost can become fully corporeal.”

“Ugh, how did I not see it? A ghost can only become fully corporeal at very specific locations on All Hallows’ Eve, and ours is still flitting between the planes.”

Bernard pointed a sticky finger at me. “Exactly. What are they again?”

“If you two would study more…” CeeCee huffed. “Place of death, home of a loved one, and other significant, emotionally charged places. But you’re right, Bernard, why specifically the home of a witch, especially when it’s not helping the ghost to materialize?”

“I’ll have to ask Margery.” Because I had a strong hunch that Margery knew quite a lot about her resident ghost. I’d bet that she might even know who it was.

“Good luck with that.” Bernard raised his eyebrows at me.

I noticed he didn’t offer to accompany me.

Annalise let out a put-upon sigh. “Should I go with you? It’s not like he’s any kind of backup.” She gave Ben a baleful look.

I was a little touched. Annalise was no more a match for Margery than I was. She wouldn’t appreciate gushing sentiment, so I just pointed out the obvious. “You have to stay in case the guests need an additional zap. And exactly how bad is that migraine that CeeCee mentioned?”

Annalise tipped her head and squinted.
